Janice Chen

Janice is GTC's named China trademark counsel and the signer on every Chinese trademark application filed by the firm. From the Guangzhou office, she files directly with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) in Beijing through a recognised Chinese trademark agency, and corresponds with the office in Mandarin end-to-end.

Her practice centres on the two things that determine whether a foreign brand actually owns its name in China: the Chinese-character (中文) defensive-filing strategy that prevents a squatter from registering a phonetic or meaning-based transliteration, and the CNIPA sub-class system that decides what goods are actually covered.

Janice also handles the response side when foreign brands discover squatters have already filed against their name — advising on the 3-month publication-window opposition, on post-grant invalidation proceedings, and on coexistence or assignment settlements where the commercial calculus favours them.
