Why timing matters
Why South Korea renewal timing matters.
Registration-based, no use declaration required at renewal
KIPO renewal fees are substantial (KRW 311,000+/class for the 10-year). The 5-year split option is useful for brands evaluating ongoing commercial viability in Korea, but doubles the admin work and the timing risk.
Grace period exists, but it costs
KIPO allows 6-month grace period after expiry with double-fee surcharge, but the surcharge is real money, and the registration is technically lapsed during that window. Better to file in the standard window.
Missed renewal = lost mark
If the South Korea grace period also lapses, the mark is cancelled and the date you lose. Any third party can register the same mark from the day after, including in jurisdictions where squatting is endemic.
