Does CIPO remind me before my Canadian mark expires?

No. Under section 46 of the Trademarks Act, CIPO sends its notice only after the term has ended and the fee is unpaid. You can then pay until 6 months after expiry, or 2 months after the notice if later. There is no late fee.

My mark was registered before June 2019. When is it due?

Registrations on the register before 17 June 2019 had a 15-year term. For the first renewal after that date, the fee can be paid at any time up to 6 months after the 15 years end. Every term after that is 10 years.

Do I need to prove use to renew my Canadian mark?

No. But once 3 years have passed since registration, anyone can ask CIPO to issue a section 45 notice. You must then show use in Canada in the 3 years before the notice. Renewal is a good time to drop goods you no longer sell.

What is a section 44.1 notice at renewal time?

It is a CIPO notice asking you to group your goods and services by Nice class. If the grouping adds classes, CIPO sends an adjusted renewal fee notice for the extra classes.

Is my Canadian renewal fee fixed on the date I get the notice?

No. CIPO adjusts many trademark fees on January 1 each year. A payment received after January 1 must match the new year's fee.

Can I renew only some classes of my Canadian mark online?

Yes, if the registration is already grouped by Nice class. You must keep whole classes and delete the other goods or services.

How much does a Canada renewal cost?

CIPO charges CA$595 (passed through at cost) plus GTC's $250/class service fee. The mid-term use declaration, where one applies, is a separate filing quoted when due.

When should I file my Canada trademark renewal?

The optimal window is within the CIPO's standard pre-expiry filing window. We file as soon as the office opens the renewal window, well before the deadline. 6-month grace period after expiry, or 2 months after the Registrar's notice if later is a fallback, not a strategy.
