Why timing matters
Why United Kingdom renewal timing matters.
Registration-based, no use declaration required at renewal
Post-Brexit, UK and EU renewals must be calendared separately. Your EUTM renewal does not extend to the UK comparable mark cloned from it. Missing the UKIPO deadline costs the £60/class late fee in the grace window or a full new application after.
Grace period exists, but it costs
UKIPO allows 6-month grace period after expiry with £60/class late fee, but the surcharge is real money, and the registration is technically lapsed during that window. Better to file in the standard window.
Missed renewal = lost mark
If the United Kingdom grace period also lapses, the mark is cancelled and the date you lose. Any third party can register the same mark from the day after, including in jurisdictions where squatting is endemic.
