    Filing in Singapore

Why filing in Singapore is different.

The rules that change how we search, draft and file for you. We handle every one of them.

    1

    First-to-file with quick turnaround

IPOS is one of the fastest major Asian trademark registries. Examination typically completes within 4-6 months of filing.

    2

    English-language examination

Singapore conducts all trademark examination in English. There is no requirement for Chinese, Malay, or Tamil drafting unless you choose defensive parallel filings.

    3

    Strategic ASEAN hub

Singapore is the natural anchor for ASEAN trademark strategy. Brands typically pair Singapore registration with parallel filings in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

    4

    Strong customs and enforcement

A registered Singapore trade mark supports IPOS-coordinated customs detention at one of the world's busiest container ports.

Your attorney runs the check, the drafting and every letter from the IPOS with you, from the first search to the certificate and the renewal ten years on.

    Before you file

Why Singapore applications get refused, and how the free check helps.

Conflict with an earlier Singapore mark (Section 8)

    about 26%

An earlier identical or similar IPOS registration (or Madrid designation of Singapore) covers the same or similar goods. A pre-filing IPOS clearance search catches this before you spend SGD 380.

    Lack of distinctiveness (Section 7)

    about 24%

The mark is generic, descriptive, or laudatory in English. Counsel argues acquired distinctiveness or refines the specification.

Descriptive or geographic terms (Section 7(1)(c))

    about 12%

The mark describes a kind, quality, intended purpose, or geographical origin. Strict English-language examination.

    Public-policy or prohibited-sign refusals

    about 7%

Includes marks contrary to public policy, deceptive marks, and protected official insignia.
